Grammar: Comparative and superlative adjectives

Adjectives

What is an adjective? Adjectives are words that describe or modify other words.

It’s a beautiful car.
They’re blue flowers.

Adjectives go (normaly) before a noun or after a verb.

It’s a big house (noun). The house is (verb) big.

Adjectives don’t change before a plural noun.

NOT: They’re prettys flowers.

Different types of adjectives:

 

  • Personal titles: Mr, Mrs, Dr, Lord, Sir, etc
  • Possessive adjectives: my, your, his, her, its, our, their.
  • The articles
    • Indefinite: a, an
    • Definite: the
  • Demonstrative adjectives: this, that, these, those.
  • Indefinite adjectives: no, any, many, few and several.
  • Numbers: ordinals and cardinals.

Personality/emotion - happy, sad, excited, scared, frightened,
Sound - loud, quiet, noisy, mute, .
Taste - sweet, sour, acidic, bitter, salty, tasty, delicious, spicy
Touch - hard, soft, smooth,
Size, weight - heavy, light, big, small, little, tiny, tall, short, fat, thin, huge,
Speed - quick, fast, slow,
Temperature - hot, cold, freezing,
Age - young, old, mature, modern, ...
Distance - short, long, far, close, faraway
Shape - round, square, flat, rotund, straight.
Brightness - light, dark, bright,
Colour - pink, red, orange, blue, purple, black, white, gray, brown, transparent
Time - early, late, delayed, punctual, ...
Origin/location - northern, polar, American, Spanish, Canadian, Mexican,
Material - glass, cotton, plastic, metal.
