Past simple

Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past.

Regular verbs

Afirmative: Negative: Interrogative
Subject + verb (+ed) Subject + did not / didn't + Verb Did + Subject + Verb?

I played basketball yesterday.

She studied hard last week.

He cried a lot two hours ago..

The concert didn't end at 11 o'clock.

He didn't want a wine.

They didn't arrive early.

Did he play football?

Did your cousin come last Tuesday?

Did he phone you?

Short Answers

Yes, I did. No, I didn't

Did you call the police? No, I didn't.

NOTES:

Regular verbs: play, study, cry, arrive, want...

Irregular verbs: speak, drive, run, see...

You can use the past simple with these past time expressions: this morning, yesterday, last night, last week, last month, last year...
